Noon, Namshi or your own site: where a new clothing brand should start

Almost every founder launching a clothing brand in the UAE asks the same question: start on marketplaces or on our own website? There is no universal answer, but there is a way to decide that protects your margin and your cash. Here is how I look at it.

What marketplaces give you, and what they take

Marketplaces such as Noon, Namshi (part of the Noon group since 2022), Amazon.ae and, for luxury, Ounass give you traffic and trust from day one, and some offer fulfilment so you do not need your own logistics. In exchange you pay commissions and fees, wait for payouts, accept their return rules and compete on price next to other brands.

Terms differ by platform and change over time, so do not plan on someone else’s numbers: take the current terms for your category and put them into your own channel economics.

What your own site gives you, and what it costs

Your own site keeps the margin and the customer data, lets you control price and presentation, and builds the brand rather than the platform. But traffic is yours to buy or earn, and you handle payments, delivery, cash on delivery and returns yourself or through partners.

Compare channels on margin after everything

  • Price after discounts typical for the channel
  • Commission and fees, fulfilment or delivery cost
  • Expected return rate and the cost of a return
  • Payout timing: how long cash is locked
  • Cost of getting traffic (for your own site)

A sensible order for a new brand

For many new brands a workable path is: launch with your own site plus one marketplace that fits your price point, learn your real return rate and best-sellers, then add channels. A premium or luxury label will look at Ounass and its own site first; a mass-market label may lean on Noon and Amazon.ae for volume.

Whatever you choose, decide before you buy the first collection: channels change how much stock you need, where it sits and how long the cash is locked.

Running several channels without chaos

  • One stock plan with rules for splitting and moving stock between channels
  • One pricing logic, so channels do not undercut each other by accident
  • Payouts and returns of every channel in one payment calendar
  • One owner and weekly numbers per channel

Questions

01

Should a new clothing brand in Dubai start on Noon or its own website?

It depends on the price point and product. Many new brands start with their own site plus one marketplace that fits their segment, learn their real return rate and best-sellers, and then add channels.

02

Is Namshi part of Noon?

Yes, Noon agreed to acquire Namshi from Emaar in 2022.

03

How do I compare marketplace and own-site margin?

Take price after typical discounts, subtract commissions and fees, fulfilment or delivery, the cost of returns and, for your own site, the cost of traffic, and look at how long cash is locked until payout.
